New pop up venue to bring surf life saving to the city
The City Beach Volleyball Courts will be transformed into a new pop up venue for the start of summer, but it will open for just four nights.
From November 20 – 23, 2014, Ross Ganf, the Creative Director behind Barrio and Lola’s Pergola, will turn the courts into the Frome Street Surf Life Saving Club (FSSLSC) - a playful sandcastle wonderland of cool drinks, relaxed dining, reclined movie viewing and late night dancing.
From 5pm each night, visitors to the FSSLSC will be able to feel the sand between their toes as they sip on wines from Alpha Box and Dice and feast on Aussie Fish and Chips from the guys at Golden Gullet.
Then as the sun comes down, the curtain goes up on a night of great Australian short film with films from finalists in this year’s Short Film Festival to be screened until 10.30pm.
It marks a new era for the Festival, which will be held outdoors for the first time in its 11 year history, and hopes to attract a wider audience as a result.
From 10.30pm, the FSSLSC will hand over to Resident sound blaster DJ Dexter (The Avalanches) and the Adelaide vinyl beach combers until the early hours of the morning.
FSSLSC Patrol Captain Ross Ganf said he couldn’t pass up the chance to create a new venue in the heart of the city.
“We are creating more than just an outdoor cinema on the beach,” said Ross.
“The design uses the actual sand as its chief medium. We literally make the seating from the sand so you can watch some of Australia’s hottest young film talent. It’s like sitting in your own cinema sand castle. Super relaxed with amazing drinks and beats."
“While we’re giving away a few details about what’s planned we’ve got plenty of surprises in store and people will just have to come along to find out more.
“Numbers will be limited so we’re advising people to arrive early so they’re able to enjoy the whole night.”
For guaranteed entry, people can purchase a ticket to the Shorts film screening for $20 with limited free entry before 7pm and after 10.30pm.
The Shorts Film Festival team is excited about this year’s event which will still contain the key ingredients of previous festivals. They include bringing short film into a unique environment, celebrating storytelling and awarding filmmakers with a $50,000 prize pool.
Shorts Board Member Kirsty Stark said creating the Frome Street Surf Life Saving Club gave the Festival a chance to introduce short film to a new audience.
“Filmmaking is creative so it makes sense the environment in which the films are enjoyed should also be creative,” said Kirsty.
“The social atmosphere which has made the festival popular will continue with the opportunity for people to eat, drink and talk about the films with not only each other, but also many of filmmakers themselves.”
