Hansen Yuncken completes Australia's largest green star rated industrial building
Leading commercial construction company Hansen Yuncken has completed Australia’s largest Green Star rated industrial building at Huntingwood in Sydney’s western suburbs on behalf of Goodman.
The $82 million Metcash Mega Distribution Centre in the Bungarribee Industrial Estate has been certified 4 Star Green Star against the Design Industrial Tool Rating, making it the largest industrial project to receive the rating in Australia. It is also the first refrigerated warehouse to achieve an Industrial Green Star rating.
Two other recently completed projects, a Goodyear Tyres Centre and Ingram Micro Distribution Centre have also been awarded a 4 Star Green Star Design Industrial V1 rating. Both are located at nearby Eastern Creek.
Hansen Yuncken NSW & ACT Manager, Adam Towner, said all three projects demonstrated the company’s ability to complete sustainable buildings on a large industrial scale.
“We have a strong track record of delivering on innovative design and construction techniques to achieve nation-leading Green Star ratings for commercial, industrial and health projects around Australia,” Mr Towner said.
“The Metcash Mega Distribution Centre breaks new ground in demonstrating that large scale industrial complexes can meet stringent sustainability criteria such as energy and water efficiency, indoor environmental quality and resource conservation.”
Features of the 70,000m2 Metcash facility include:
- A steel fibre reinforced concrete slab, saving 260,000kg of steel and 2,960m3 of concrete – the equivalent of removing 253 cars from the road for 1 year;
- Reduction in potable water of 288 kL per week;
- An ammonia refrigeration system with zero ozone depletion potential and zero global warming potential of refrigerants used;
- Daylight linking of warehouse lighting so lights are switched off when daylight is sufficient – providing a greenhouse gas emission reduction equivalent to permanently removing 560 cars from the road.
Stage 1 of the project included construction of a 43,355m2 ambient warehouse with confectionary storage, workshop and battery charge areas, dock levelers, gate house and truck wash.
Stage 2 included construction of 20,455m2 of fresh, chilled and freezer warehouse buildings.
Hansen Yuncken was responsible for construction of Australia’s first 6 Star Green Star commercial building – Melbourne’s Council House 2. It also constructed SA Water’s VS1 building in Adelaide, the largest 6 Star Green Star office building in Australia at the time of completion.
Hansen Yuncken, established in 1918, is one of Australia’s largest private commercial construction contractors. The company employs 700 people around Australia with offices in Sydney, Newcastle, Canberra, Orange, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Hobart, Rockhampton, Cairns, Townsville, Shepparton and Albury/Wodonga.
