Scotch College Year 8 student Benji Riggs has been honoured by the South Australian Government for his exceptional contribution to the arts.

Presented with the 2010 Minister for Education Award at a special ceremony last Friday to mark Children’s Week, the 13-year-old was recognised for his tireless efforts as a stage performer this year in which he has starred in five different musicals and attracted widespread acclaim.

Notably, Benji was also acknowledged for his participation in this year’s inaugural World Children’s Theatre Ensemble in London where he was chosen to perform alongside students from around the world to raise money for children from third world countries. To raise money for his flights to the UK, he spent most of his Saturdays busking in Rundle Mall with his tap shoes.

Scotch College Head of Performing Arts and Director of Music Antony Hubmayer nominated Benji for the award and said his achievements this year are fully deserving of such high praise.

“Benji is a remarkable student who has managed some remarkable things this year with his singing, acting and dancing talents, both at school and in professional productions,” said Mr Hubmayer.

“He has performed for thousands of people across the State – and overseas – and helped raise money for less advantaged children and charities like the Make-A-Wish Foundation along the way.”

Benji’s accomplishments this year also include initiating a performance troupe to educate and stimulate interest in musical theatre among primary school students. As a co-producer, writer, choreographer and director, Benji helped guide the touring production which performed to over 2,000 students in SA.

He also spent his April school holidays entertaining visitors to the SA Maritime Museum in a local production of “Shipwrecked” before starring in the State Opera’s Australian premiere of “Different Fields” which went on to win the Adelaide Theatre’s Guide annual award for Best Professional Musical.

In addition, Benji furthered his artistic pursuits at Scotch this year where he is involved in the college’s concert choir and band, plus a full range of dance and musical activities.

Presented by South Australian Minister for Education, the Hon Jay Weatherill, the annual Minister for Education Award recognises outstanding contribution, leadership and achievements by a student aged between 13 and 18.

Announcement of the award formed part of festivities for Children’s Week, which is held every year to promote child issues including health, recreation and education, and to recognise children’s achievements.
