A red wine from the Hickinbotham family’s Paringa Vineyards in South Australia’s Riverland has been named by international wine magazine, the US-based Wine Spectator, among the Top 200 great value wines from around the world.
The Paringa Shiraz 2008 trumps the list of 14 red wines from Australia including Wolf Blass, Rosemount and Yalumba in the magazine’s October issue which went on sale this week. Wine Spectator awarded the Paringa Shiraz 89 points. It sells for just $10 a bottle in the US – making it exceptional value against other wines from 15 recognised wine producing nations around the world.
“Paringa topped Australia’s offering in terms of value and its rating of 89 points compares very favourably to wines from France, Spain, California and the rest of the world,” says Paringa director, Mr David Hickinbotham.
“It is not the first time that Paringa has been named among the world’s best value wines on this highly credible and prestigious list so it is certainly very gratifying that the world’s leading wine critics have consistently recognized the quality and value of what we produce.”
Paringa Vineyard – considered to be one of the most significant privately-owned vineyard operations in Australia – is currently on the market, following the death in May this year of Hickinbotham family patriarch, Alan Hickinbotham.
Described by Jimmy Watson trophy winner and former Australian Wine Judge Chairman, Brian Barry OAM, as ‘one of Australia’s truly great vineyards’, Paringa is a 716-hectare property which sits 80 metres above the floodplain on the Murray River near the town of Renmark. Approximately 317 hectares of Paringa Vineyard are planted out to Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay grapes, while a further 300 hectares are available for future planting.
Grapes from the vineyard are sold to many of Australia’s great wineries, and have been used in Penfolds’ Kalimna label.
The Hickinbotham family has traditionally retained approximately 20 per cent of Paringa Vineyard’s production for its own label, Paringa. The majority of the Paringa label wine has been exported to the USA, UK, Japan, Canada, Thailand and Malaysia.
‘Paringa is a beautiful place where clean soil meets clean air meets clean water. It’s one of the great places to grow low-cost, high-value grapes,” says David Hickinbotham. “We have put in place a structure where only three people can run over 300 hectares of vines. We would like to sell Paringa to someone who values the vineyard’s history, but who can make the most of its enormous potential.’
