Awards for Emirates Wolgan Valley Resort & Spa, ASC Shipyard Development
Leading construction company Hansen Yuncken has been named National Commercial Master Builder of the Year in the Master Builders Australia 2010 National Construction Awards, for its work on the Emirates Wolgan Valley Resort & Spa in NSW.
Hansen Yuncken won three national awards from the Master Builders Association for:
- National Commercial Master Builder of the Year – Emirates Wolgan Valley Resort & Spa;
- National President’s Award – ASC Shipyard Development (SA); and
- Excellence in Construction of Commercial Buildings $50-100 million – Emirates Wolgan Valley Resort & Spa.
Hansen Yuncken Executive Chairman, Peter Kennedy, said the national awards were testament to the hard work, experience and skills of the company’s people.
“The Emirates Wolgan Valley Resort & Spa has rightly been recognised as one of the finest facilities of its type in the world, and Hansen Yuncken is proud to have had the opportunity to take on the extremely complex and exacting project brief in a remote setting,” Mr Kennedy said.
“The brief and design specifications required us to construct a resort of the highest quality both in terms of luxury and sustainability, with minimal disturbance of local flora and fauna, in an isolated location and through very changeable climatic conditions.
“Hansen Yuncken decided very early on that a highly inclusive team approach was required in which everyone, from subcontractor level up, was encouraged to ‘think outside the square’ to solve unique challenges, and ultimately share in the resultant savings. Design input from the customer Emirates, their project manager Coffey International and designers was paramount.
“Our project team has done an extraordinary job in living up to Hansen Yuncken’s motto of ‘building value’ in all projects that we undertake.”
The ASC Shipyard Development project in SA, which won the prestigious National President’s Award, was for the construction of world-class, large-scale naval infrastructure to deliver Australia’s largest and most complex defence project, the $8 billion Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) program.
The landmark development included site preparation and the design and construction of a pre-outfit hall, multi-storey outfitting workshop, three-storey administration building, two-storey wharf support building and eight support services buildings, plus heavy duty payments, car parking, and landscape and storage areas. It also included extensive retro-fitting to make some existing buildings fit for purpose and designing for 13 overhead travelling cranes – one of the nation’s largest heavy fabrication lifting capabilities.
“The collaboration and communication on this project between the project team, the client and key suppliers, both in Australia and overseas, were key factors in the development’s success,” Mr Kennedy said.
“At its peak, the development involved more than 50 companies and 400 people. We undertook a great deal of research to ensure the materials and detailing would provide the best result for ASC and, as a result, the facility was delivered at an extremely high standard of quality.
“Overall, Hansen Yuncken achieved eight finalist nominations in these national awards, and for us to have won three of the major awards is an enormous credit to the commitment of our project teams across the country.
“These national awards build on our earlier success in securing both the NSW and Victorian 2010 MBA Commercial Master Builder of the Year awards.”
