Soccer Friendly Helps Young Refugees Kick Goals

June 11, 2010

Refugee school children who have recently arrived in Adelaide to begin their new lives will play a cross-cultural game of soccer against students from Saint Ignatius’ College later this month to mark SA Refugee Week (June 20-26).

Playing for the Friendship Cup, students from the Adelaide Secondary School of English – the only government secondary school in SA for new migrants – will take on St Ignatius’ College in boys and girls matches at Athelstone on Thursday, June 24.

Saint Ignatius’ College Director of Co-Curricular Activities Con Kapnistis said the annual event – now in its seventh year – is a terrific way to build bridges between teenagers of radically different backgrounds.

“This is much more than just a social game of schoolyard soccer. It represents a fantastic opportunity for our students to welcome young refugees to Australia and begin breaking down any cultural barriers,” he said.

“Importantly, it will give students from both schools the chance to meet one another and exchange stories about their backgrounds. And who knows, one simple game of soccer like this could result in some long-lasting friendships.”

The Adelaide Secondary School of English at West Croydon helps young refugees settle in to their new way of life by equipping them with skills to prepare them for high school and participation in general society.

Students come from a wide range of cultural, religious, educational and socio-economic backgrounds and benefit by gaining a better understanding of the diversity of cultures that exist in Australia.

“Many of these young refugees have fled from some of the most underprivileged and volatile countries in the world, including Afghanistan, Sierra Leone and Liberia, so it’s important we make them feel welcome,” said Mr Kapnistis.

“All eyes may be on the World Cup in South Africa at the moment, but as far as bringing people together from around the globe and embracing different cultures, we believe the Friendship Cup is just as important.”

The Friendship Cup will be played at Saint Ignatius’ College, Athelstone, on Thursday, June 24, at 1pm. Adelaide United will support the event again with players from the men’s and women’s teams making guest appearances.
