Hansen Yuncken Continues Strong Growth with Record Turnover

September 2010

Leading national commercial construction company, Hansen Yuncken, has achieved record turnover of $1.2 billion for the 2009/10 financial year as a result of significant project wins and completions across a wide range of commercial sectors.

Executive Chairman, Peter Kennedy, said the company’s success had been built on developing specialist expertise and proven delivery capability in market sectors identified for strong future growth, in particular schools, hospitals and defence.

The company also continues to pick up significant work in the aged care, commercial, retail and entertainment sectors – which assisted in consolidating Hansen Yuncken’s position as the largest private commercial construction company in Australia

Among the many projects Hansen Yuncken has been delivering in 2009/10 are the Orange Base Hospital, Emirates’ 6-star Wolgan Valley luxury resort and spa in the Blue Mountains, schools ‘Public Private Partnership’ (PPP) projects in SA and NSW, ‘Building Education Revolution’ (BER) projects across four states and the Cairns International Airport domestic terminal redevelopment.

“We are currently delivering projects valued in excess of $2.9 billion, which has enabled us to further build our balance sheet and credit rating, and thereby enhance our ability to continue the growth of the company,” Mr Kennedy said.

“Hansen Yuncken now employs more than 800 people around the country. We believe we have a very talented group of employees who are committed to excelling at their work and ‘building value’ for our customers.

“As a result of our strong balance sheet, we have $240 million in securities from Westpac and QBE which has enabled us to tender for projects of the magnitude of the $1.7 billion Royal Adelaide Hospital PPP project in a joint venture with Leighton Contractors.”

Hansen Yuncken achieved a net profit of $51.5 million before tax in 2009/10 through its strong performance across the whole business.

Mr Kennedy said the future of the company was positive, with a projected turnover in 2010/11 in excess of $1.2 billion.

Hansen Yuncken is now considered the largest private Australian company operating exclusively in the commercial construction sector, having jumped from 35th to 27th in BRW magazine’s recently published list of ‘Top 500 Private Companies’.

The company was also named Australia’s Private Business of the Year for 2010 in the annual BRW ANZ Private Business Awards.

Hansen Yuncken has already received 15 awards in 2010 from the Australian Institute of Building and Master Builders Association, and was recently named Victorian Master Builder of the Year.

The sustained growth has been built on the success of projects in urban and regional areas across five states, with significant work being generated through referral or from repeat customers:

  • In NSW, Hansen Yuncken has been undertaking all BER Schools works in south-west Sydney valued in excess of $400 million and the $91 million HMAS Creswell base redevelopment. It is also currently delivering the $194 million Orange Base Hospital redevelopment.
  • In South Australia, the company is managing the $193 million PPP ‘super’ schools redevelopment and $113 million Queen Elizabeth Hospital Stage 2 redevelopment.  It has completed the Adelaide Entertainment Centre redevelopment and has been awarded the $110 million Glenside Campus health facility project.
  • In Victoria, Hansen Yuncken has completed the $38 million National Ice Sports Centre at Docklands and the $32 million Crown Casino Promenade Conference Hall.  It is undertaking a $46 million shipyards redevelopment at Williamstown and is managing more than $70 million of BER schools works.
  • In Queensland, the company is close to completing the $159 million Cairns International Airport domestic terminal redevelopment, and has completed the AQIS Office and Laboratory development and fit out.
  • In Tasmania, Hansen Yuncken is building the $46 million Museum of Old and New Art on the banks of the Derwent River, and has secured a contract for the $30 million redevelopment of Launceston General Hospital.

Hansen Yuncken, established in 1918, is one of Australia’s largest private commercial construction contractors.  The company employs over 800 people around Australia with offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Hobart, Newcastle, Townsville, Cairns, and Shepparton/Albury.
