24 December 2010
South Australian Meals on Wheels volunteers are gearing up for another bumper festive season, with thousands of Christmas meals to be delivered to clients over the holiday.
Most of the 5,000 Christmas meals will be delivered on December 24, which is the last day of deliveries for the year.
Meals on Wheels volunteers around South Australia will be cooking up an impressive feast, with the following ingredients going through the 40 kitchens across the state:
- 1,125 litres of soup
- 750 kilograms of roast turkey
- 200 litres of gravy
- 500 kilograms of potatoes
- 325 kilograms of pumpkin
- 325 kilograms of peas
- 400 kilograms of plum pudding
- 500 litres of brandy custard
Meals on Wheels SA Chief Executive Sharyn Broer says the organisation believes that together, Meals on Wheels branches produce the largest Christmas lunch in the state.
“Our clients appreciate receiving a special festive meal at this time of year. Our service really is ‘more than just a meal’ and especially at Christmas time, this rings true,” Sharyn says.
“Not only do our volunteers deliver a nutritious and tasty meal to our clients, but the friendly contact they provide – all throughout the year – is really important for our clients.”
Adding to the Christmas spirit for volunteers, Meals on Wheels clients also receive a Christmas hamper or gift from the organisation to mark the season. Some branches make up hampers with assorted foods and goodies to help clients over the Christmas period.
Meals on Wheels helps more than 10,500 South Australians – including the elderly, those with a disability and carers – live independently in their own home through the provision of nutritious delivered meals. Meals are prepared, cooked and delivered by volunteers.
Meals on Wheels has 100 branches (40 of which are kitchens) located throughout South Australia, and deliver 5,000 meals per day.
In 2010, Meals on Wheels delivered over 1,200,000 meals to their 10,500 clients.
