South Australians on low incomes and those at risk of homelessness will soon benefit from the efforts of volunteers from IKEA Adelaide and Santos when they join forces on Saturday 29 January to construct and install furniture for the new Common Ground apartments in Light Square.
More than 160 volunteers with allen keys in hand are expected to assist between the two ‘build sites’ at Light Square and the IKEA Adelaide store where 800 pieces of furniture will be assembled.
The furniture includes beds and bedside tables donated by IKEA to help furnish the 52 apartments which will soon provide much needed accommodation for Adelaide’s homeless. IKEA has also donated mattresses.
The project has also provided an opportunity and challenge to the IKEA Adelaide Interior Design team who’ve designed the interiors of the building’s two apartment types to maximise the available space. Designs have been created for both a One Bedroom and Studio apartment.
IKEA Adelaide Store Manager, Ms Agneta Simon said we’re proud to be involved with Common Ground and have built a strong relationship since helping to furnish the Franklin Street apartments in 2008.
“Our co-workers and their friends and families are excited about lending a hand on the Build Day, which will be a fun and rewarding event.
“IKEA has more than forty co-workers helping out on the day and this number is expected to increase with friends and family.”
Assembled furniture from the IKEA Adelaide build site will be transported to Light Square in the late afternoon on the Saturday and then installed into the apartments.
This will provide the first opportunity to see how the apartments will look and what it will be like for residents living at Light Square. The day will end with a BBQ supplied by Port Adelaide Rotary Club for all the helpers.
The first residents of Common Ground’s Light Square project will begin moving into their apartments in Late March.
