Hansen Yuncken Consortium reaches financial close on new Royal Adelaide Hospital PPP Project

6 June 2011

The SA Health Partnership - a consortium comprising Hansen Yuncken, Leighton Contractors, Macquarie Capital Group and Spotless - has reached financial close with the South Australian Government to deliver the new Royal Adelaide Hospital (nRAH) Public Private Partnership project.

The $1.85 billion PPP is the largest and most advanced hospital project ever undertaken in Australia, and the single largest infrastructure project in the State’s history.

Hansen Yuncken will be responsible for design, construction and commissioning of the new hospital in a 50:50 joint venture with Leighton Contractors.

Hansen Yuncken CEO, Joe Barr, said Hansen Yuncken, together with Leighton Contractors, had assembled an experienced, high quality design and construction team drawing on expertise from around Australia and overseas.

“Hansen Yuncken is excited to be given the opportunity to be involved in such an iconic development - one that will be the most technologically advanced health facility in this country with the highest standard of patient care,” Mr Barr said.

“This significant project will continue our long term relationship with the health care community both in South Australia and through projects undertaken around Australia.  We have recently completed or are involved in major hospital developments and upgrades across four states.

“The value of this project means we will be undertaking more than $600 million of works annually in the health sector alone.”

The new Royal Adelaide Hospital will provide a comprehensive range of complex clinical care to patients including adult medical and surgical services, emergency care, mental health, outpatient and community services, and diagnostic services.

The new hospital is an investment in additional capacity with 800 beds (700 multi-day beds and 100 same-day beds) compared to the current 680. It will offer more operating theatres and procedural rooms, more intensive care beds and a significant increase in emergency care thereby providing an overall 30% increase in capacity for patients throughout the hospital.

In a first for any Australian public hospital, every inpatient will enjoy the privacy of a single room and ensuite.

The hospital also will have a commercial precinct offering a restaurant, mini-mart, cafes, crèche, gymnasium, bank, post office and hairdresser, and underground car park with more than 2300 bays.

Green initiatives will include rooftop rainwater and recycling, solar-boosted hot water, water sensitive landscaping, maximised use of natural light, and a tri-generation system to utilise waste heat from energy generators to provide heating and cooling.

Construction of the new RAH is expected to begin in coming months and is scheduled for completion in 2016.

Hansen Yuncken, established in 1918, is Australia’s largest private commercial construction contractor.  The company employs more than 800 people around Australia with offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Hobart, Brisbane, Cairns, Townsville, Newcastle, Shepparton/Albury and Orange.  Hansen Yuncken is the recipient of the 2010 ANZ/BRW Private Business of the Year Award, and National MBA Commercial Builder of the Year Award.
