Scotch develops iPhone app for parents

29 June 2011

Parents at Scotch College now have a modern way to keep abreast of school news and activities following the launch of an iPhone application.

One of the first schools in Australia to develop a smartphone application for parents, the college has created a “Scotch Mobile” web app to make it easier for the school community to keep up to date with coming events, timetables and latest news.

Designed for use by staff, students and prospective parents as well, the app – developed by Scotch teacher and multimedia specialist Richard Blinco – was released to the college community earlier this month and has already received overwhelmingly positive feedback.

“The concept of the Scotch Mobile web app is to publish information that is potentially vital to parents when they are out and about in a format that can be easily viewed using mobile phone technology,” said Mr Blinco.

“Parents can now install the app on their mobile phones to access everything from the latest school news and upcoming events to the times, venues and directions for Saturday morning sport.

“It also contains daily notices, calendar information, school holiday dates and an extensive contacts list for parents who want quick and easy access to information about their child’s school activities.

“Scotch Mobile is a clever extension of the college website and represents a new way for the school to engage with parents and the wider Scotch community.”

Mr Blinco said the Scotch Mobile web app has been principally designed for the iPhone but can also be viewed on a range of other smartphones and laptops that support the latest web technologies.

To install the app, iPhone users should use Safari to navigate to http://firstclass.scotch.sa.edu.au/mobile/ and follow the prompts. Scotch has also created a YouTube video about how to install the app.
