Major Projects Consolidate Hansen Yuncken’s Growth

October 14, 2011

Leading national commercial construction company, Hansen Yuncken, today announced it has achieved turnover of $1.2 billion for the 2010/11 financial year.

Chief Executive Officer, Joe Barr, said the company’s turnover, on a par with its 2010 result, was built on developing specialist expertise and proven delivery capability in market sectors identified for strong future growth, in particular schools, hospitals, defence and aged care.

Among the landmark projects Hansen Yuncken secured or completed in 2010/11 are the new Royal Adelaide Hospital, Museum of Old & New Art (MONA) near Hobart, air traffic control towers in Melbourne and Adelaide, the Medica Centre in Sydney, Cairns Airport domestic terminal redevelopment, and Orange Hospital.

“We are currently delivering projects to the value of $3.5 billion. This enables us to further build our balance sheet and credit rating, and thereby enhance our ability to continue the growth of the company,” Mr Barr said.

"Our strong balance sheet, combined with $270 million in securities from Westpac and QBE enables us to successfully tender for projects of the magnitude of the $1.8 billion Royal Adelaide Hospital PPP project, now being delivered in a joint venture with Leighton Contractors.“

Hansen Yuncken now employs 730 people and provides work for thousands more local contractors in cities and towns around the country. Our employees have a strong commitment towards excelling at their work and ‘building value’ for our customers.”

Hansen Yuncken achieved a net profit of $39 million before tax in 2010/11, and is forecasting turnover in 2011/12 to be maintained at around $1.2 billion.

The company is the largest private Australian company operating exclusively in the commercial construction sector, and sits at 28th in BRW magazine’s current list of ‘Top 500 Private Companies’.

Hansen Yuncken has already received over 20 major state and national industry awards in 2011 from the Australian Institute of Building and Master Builders Association, and was named National Commercial Master Builder of the Year at the end of 2010.

The sustained growth has been built on the success of projects in both urban and regional areas across five states, with significant work being generated through referral or from repeat customers. In addition to the previously noted major projects;

  • In NSW, Hansen Yuncken has completed Costco’s second Australian store at Auburn in Sydney, handed over the privately-funded Medica Centre in Hurstville, and continues its involvement in the Sydney Harbour Wharf Upgrade program.

  • In South Australia, the company has completed six super schools in a State Government PPP, recently completed the Adelaide Film & Screen Centre and has started construction of Rundle Place in the Adelaide CBD.

  • In Victoria, Hansen Yuncken has redeveloped the Old County Court in William St, managed the BAE Shipyards upgrade, and was involved in several redevelopments at La Trobe, Melbourne, RMIT and Victoria University campuses.

  • In Queensland, the company has completed the Cairns Botanic Gardens Visitors Centre, handed over the James Cook University School of Veterinary and Biomedical Science building, and secured the Rockhampton Hospital project.

  • In Tasmania, Hansen Yuncken is managing the redevelopment of the Launceston General Hospital and CT/PET Scan Unit at Royal Hobart Hospital, and has been involved in the redevelopment of several high school and college campuses.

Hansen Yuncken, established in 1918, is one of Australia’s largest private commercial construction contractors. The company employs 730 people around Australia with offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Hobart, Canberra, Newcastle, Orange, Townsville, Cairns and Shepparton/Albury.
