The Directors of independent cinema operator, Republic Theatres, are thrilled and delighted at Burnside Council’s decision to give them the opportunity to care for and manage the Chelsea Cinema in Kensington Park.
Republic Theatres currently operates the Trak Cinema, and has taken over operation of the CMAX Cinema in Darwin.
Joint Managing Director, Michael Todd, who also previously managed the Capri Theatre, said the Chelsea theatre would show a mix of blockbuster and art house movies, and would also be available for stage productions attracting local and international performances.
“There’s no hiding our joy at the outcome of the Council’s decision. We have a fantastic opportunity to continue the good work of those before us and to build on this foundation,” Mr Todd said.
“However, our intentions for the future use of Chelsea go beyond movies. One of our main aims is to see the Chelsea realise its full potential as an entertainment venue by also allowing stage productions.
“We want to support the artistic endeavours of the performing arts community and local schools with a much needed venue for their activities.”
Joint Managing Director, Michael Schneider, said the company has appointed experienced and dynamic venue sales executive and production manager, Nicole Seal to help attract local, national and international entertainers of the highest calibre. Ms Seal has previously worked in a similar role with the Adelaide Festival Centre Trust.
“We see our role not only as business operators, but more as custodians and guardians of one of Adelaide’s most cherished historical landmarks,” Mr Schneider said.
“We have given a commitment that we will undertake historic restoration and maintenance of the site, in consultation with the Burnside Council and relevant historical authorities. We want to return the Chelsea to its glory days, dating back to 1925 when it was first known as the Princess Theatre.
“We’re excited to take on this opportunity and thoroughly look forward to restoring and reinvigorating this South Australian icon.”
