Adelaide named Australia's best capital city airport - again

16 November 2011

Adelaide Airport has been voted Australia’s Capital City Airport of the Year by its peers at the Australian Airports Association’s National Industry Awards, held in Brisbane overnight.

It is the third time Adelaide Airport has won the award in the past six years, having also been successful in 2006 and 2009.

The Australian Airports Association in particular recognised Adelaide Airport for completing one of Australia’s largest runway resurfacing projects on budget, ahead of schedule and with no flight disruptions or community concerns raised.

The association said the Adelaide Airport team was “to be congratulated on the success of a major project that will ensure that the airport continues to deliver significant social and economic benefits to Adelaide and South Australia as a whole”.

Adelaide Airport Ltd (AAL) Managing Director, Mark Young, said the achievement was an outstanding result for the airport and its staff, and in particular for its project management team.

“This award is testament to a great team that has excelled in risk and project management,” Mr Young said.

“The team’s efforts in talking with and listening to the local community, and identifying environmental and other issues was a stand out.

“Adelaide Airport Ltd is proud of what we have been able to achieve, both in terms of running an efficient domestic and international airport and through our interaction with the community and stakeholders.”

Former AAL managing director, Phil Baker, also was recognised last night for his contribution to the industry by being presented with the Aviation Personality of the Year Award.

Over the past couple of months, AAL also has won three awards at the annual Property Council of Australia Shopping Centre Awards for SA, and a national Australian Institute of Project Management Award for its runway resurfacing project.

In 2007, Adelaide Airport was named as the world’s second best airport in the 5 – 15 million passengers category by Airports Council International.  In 2008 it was voted equal best Australian airport for quality of service by the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission.
