Digital and Social Media

Digital joins the mainstream

Digital communication is not a "grand experiment". Nor is it a game.

Digital communication and social media channels can be used to engage the increasing number of customers and other stakeholders who no longer source their information from the so-called “traditional media” of press, radio and free-to-air television.

These people listen to iPods, download their entertainment, make their purchases online, place immense value on peer reviews and glean their current affairs from Twitter, Facebook and online news services. They might never walk into your office or through your store door and instead their first impression of your business will be through your website, your e-newsletter, an online consumer forum, a YouTube video or another of the hundreds of social media platforms out there – will their impression be the right one?

What is 'social media' or 'online networking'? Put simply, it's powerfully engaging websites or mobile phone platforms that enable people to connect with each other and share information. When you engage in social media, you’re going where the people are. It’s your chance to plug into what the community is saying, to look at competitors, to assess what leaders in your field are saying, to gain ideas and to have your say.

Corporate reputations are increasingly made or lost in the digital environment and yet too few organisations know what’s being said about them in social media, and even fewer have a digital strategy that allows them to engage in online conversations or measure its effectiveness. Inevitably this poses a major threat to corporate credibility and sales.

It's time to take note and consider how you might benefit from delving into this online social realm.
