Council partnership provides neighbourhood boost
New community centre to be established at The Heights, Durack
Palmerston residents are set to become the major beneficiaries of a major collaboration between project developers of The Heights, Durack residential development and the City of Palmerston Council.
In a ground-breaking initiative for the local community, construction will commence this year on a new lakeside community centre – directly adjacent Charles Darwin University’s Palmerston Campus – for local residents to use and call their own for generations to come.
CIC Australia, on behalf of the project developers, will contribute $750,000 towards the facility, plus the land on which it will be built, with the City of Palmerston to also contribute $750,000 and eventually take over operation of the facility on behalf of the local community.
To be used as a sales and information centre for The Heights, Durack in the interim, it is envisaged the community centre will ultimately develop as a hub for local artisans and residents of The Heights, Durack, and host regular art exhibitions, community events and meetings to help bring together residents and local groups.
Geoff Smith, Project Director of The Heights, Durack, says the partnership between project developers and the City of Palmerston Council illustrates the project’s commitment to building a genuine community.
“We’re driven by a real desire to create a new neighbourhood with its own community spirit, so initiatives like this will certainly help achieve that goal, and in doing so, give something back to the local community,” said Mr Smith.
City of Palmerston Mayor Ian Abbott says the Council’s partnership with The Heights, Durack and in particular the project developers will provide tremendous benefits for the local Durack and Palmerston community.
“Facilities like this are a crucial part of the fabric of community life and provide an important gathering place for community groups and local residents to meet,” he said.
“The Council is delighted with the generous pledge of land and funds from project developers of The Heights, Durack, and is more than happy to come to the party with its own funding to ensure a modern facility that the local community will be able to enjoy for generations to come.”
Construction is well underway at The Heights, Durack which will deliver 882 residential dwellings over the next 5-7 years, including 60 dwellings for independent retirement living. Lot sizes range from 303 sq m to 900 sq m to facilitate a diverse choice of housing options aimed at young professionals through to growing families, empty nesters and retirees.
