Media training

Number of attendees: 1 to 5
Length of session: 3 hours

Many people don’t think they need media training or are unlikely to have any dealings with the Fourth Estate. However, sensitive issues may arise within an organisation, or a major announcement might be worth promoting.

Media training isn’t just about preparing for interviews - it’s about building confidence, sharpening key  messages and understanding how the media works.

Hughes is uniquely placed to deliver media training, with our team of senior consultants having worked across radio, TV, print and online, as well as in media advisory roles within the corporate sector and across the political divide.

Being prepared is essential, and Hughes will work with you to give you the confidence to handle any situation that comes your way.

Delivered by Verity Edwards, an award-winning former journalist from The Australian, these sessions take a comprehensive overview of the media landscape in South Australia and nationally, ensuring clients learn skills to support media engagement.

Our approach

This is a hands-on workshop, designed to familiarise participants with the mechanics of the media and practical skills. The workshop helps participants to prepare for television, press and radio interviews, and teaches them techniques to deliver key messages.

These bespoke sessions are tailored to participant needs and focus on issues relating to their organisation, industry or interests.

During training, participants undergo a series of radio or television interviews where real-time feedback and appraisal is offered. The interviews focus on case studies relevant to each participant, and the importance of delivering a concise message with real impact.

Special emphasis is given to providing participants with the skills needed to handle the difficult questions they would least like to be asked. The workshop also provides techniques to establish a solid and workable relationship with journalists.

Participants will be provided with a copy of their video or recording to allow them to review their performance internally, along with a training manual for future reference.

FAQS

Do you provide individual and group sessions?

Yes, we can provide practical training for individuals and groups of  up to six people within the three-hour session. If you would like more people to attend, we suggest choosing up to six people to take part in the practical element or extending the session.

Do you provide sessions for larger groups?

Given each session is tailored to each group or organisation, we recommend getting in touch with our team to discuss group size, whether a practical element is required and session lengths.

Where do you hold media training sessions?

Media training often works better when training is held away from your worksite, to avoid distractions and allow participants to focus. Hughes can accommodate up to 12 people in our boardroom.

However, we are happy to travel to your workplace, should it be more convenient for you. We also frequently travel to regional locations in South Australia and interstate to conduct media training.

When are your media training sessions?

Media training can be booked at a time that suits your organisation. We tailor each session to your needs and can be flexible with timing.

Do you test specific scenarios?

We tailor each session to the client’s needs. We take specific scenarios into account and incorporate messaging relating to that scenario in the practical element of the training.

We will also cover a wide range of issues within your industry and discuss why the media may be interested in those topics.

For further training and support on scenario testing, we also provide crisis management testing.
