"Cake pops" craze hits Australia
Adelaide Hills bakery to supply Coles nationwide
The popularity of traditional cupcakes is under siege with new cake-on-a-stick creations known as “cake pops” becoming all the rage at birthday parties, weddings and school fetes across the country.
The bite-sized morsels of cake and icing styled as lollipops have now become so popular in Australia that Coles Supermarkets has teamed up with Adelaide Hills bakery Emmaline’s Country Kitchen to produce more than 200,000 cake pops in the lead-up to Christmas.
Set to be launched in stores around Australia on December 5, the new cake pops range marks the first time the moreish product has been offered in supermarkets anywhere in the country.
Coles’ Seasonal Bakery Category Manager, Leanne White, says Coles is excited to welcome the cake pops craze into stores nationwide.
“Cake pops are the new cupcakes,” said Ms White, adding that Coles’ range of cake pops from Emmaline’s Country Kitchen will contain no artificial colours or flavours.
“They seem to be appearing at every kids’ birthday party you go to now, while people are also opting for cake pops at baby showers, bake sales, weddings and school fetes as a modern alternative to standard sweets.
“We think the introduction of cake pops will be a big hit with our customers.”
Cake pops have become the latest dessert trend in Australia after originating in the US where a cake pops cookbook has sold more than 500,000 copies to recently make The New York Times’ best-seller list. They have also been featured on The Martha Stewart Show in America, while Starbucks is also now stocking cake pops in its chain of coffee shops.
Emmaline’s Country Kitchen Director, Andrew Horwood, says his family-owned business is pleased to be entering this partnership with Coles to supply cake pops nationally.
“We’ll be making each and every one of the more than 200,000 cake pops for Coles stores around the country,” said Mr Horwood, who has been able to offer extra employment at his Lobethal facility in South Australia.
“And like all of the other cakes and biscuits we make, we’ll be using our own recipes from scratch to hand-make the cake pops. Our aim is that all our lines, including the special cake pops, taste as though they were made in your own mother’s kitchen.”
Coles’ cake pops will be available in stores around Australia from Wednesday 5 December until sold out. They will cost $2.50 each, or two for $4.
