Caitlyn joined the Hughes team for voluntary work experience during her school holidays. With a keen interest in public relations and university applications on the horizon, she was eager to experience the industry in action. Read more about her time at Hughes below.
My work experience at Hughes PR
As a Year 12 student, I have been encouraged to explore various career paths before beginning university next year. I was fortunate to complete a few days of work experience at Hughes Public Relations, which gave me valuable insight into what a career in public relations may involve.
My time at Hughes PR was filled with valuable experiences, including the opportunity to meet the founder of Offline Campers. I was able to tour the warehouse and sit in on a meeting where future plans for the company’s image were discussed. This experience was not only engaging but also provided insight into the day-to-day responsibilities of a professional in the public relations field.
Through my work experience, I have learnt about successful South Australian businesses that make real-world impacts. As a high school student, my time at Hughes helped reaffirm my university and career goals, while also providing me with practical tools for success. For example, I received guidance in setting up a LinkedIn account, which will be a useful resource as I begin building my career in the coming years.
The team at Hughes has a variety of experienced members with diverse skill sets and specialisations, which gave me the opportunity to explore different aspects of public relations. This particularly sparked my interest in social media, which I may choose to focus on during my university studies.
An exciting part of my week at Hughes was having the opportunity to join the team on a media shoot in Port Pirie. It was a unique opportunity to see behind the scenes of a shoot for a local company, which is an experience I wouldn’t have had without my time at Hughes. Below is a photo we took on our pit stop on the way there.
