Red Nose Day - Recognising 25 years of saving babies' lives
This year marks the 25th anniversary of Red Nose Day with all Australians being encouraged to support SIDS and Kids by simply purchasing any Red Nose Day product throughout June.
In South Australia, it’s a dual celebration: 2012 marks 35 years since SIDS and Kids SA’s inception in 1977.
Since 1988, SIDS and Kids has helped save thousands of babies’ lives through education and community awareness programs, devoting $15 million into researching the possible causes of unexplained infant death, stillbirth, neonatal death and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
Since the inception of the SIDS safe sleeping campaign in the early 1990’s, the incidence of SIDS has reduced by 85% saving over 6000 babies’ lives.
Today, SIDS and Kids SA has a broader charter beyond SIDS encompassing support for families who experience the sudden unexpected death of an infant or child from conception to 6 years of age, education programs to reduce infant mortality and funding of research to find the causes of these deaths.
Each year more than 3,500 families still experience the sudden and unexpected death of a baby or child from a range of causes. More than 10,000 calls are also made to SIDS and Kids helpline for support and education every year.
To continue providing these vital support services to families in need, SIDS and Kids SA requires your help.
By purchasing a red nose in June, or by hosting your own fundraising event, you will help fund:
- A 24-hour crisis support service;
- Research into areas such as stillbirth and SIDS;
- Community education to reduce the risk of SIDS and fatal sleeping accidents.
