First day of school for newest Facility Dog Westy

Class is in session for Guide Dogs SA/NT’s newest Facility Dog, Westy, who has been warmly welcomed by students at Torrens Valley Christian School in Hope Valley. 

Westy, who is the second Guide Dogs SA/NT Facility Dog to be placed with an independent school in South Australia, will support the wellbeing of students and encourage them to attend and engage with their education. 

He will join other Guide Dogs SA/NT-trained Facility Dogs in the workforce, including Canine 

Court Companions Zeb and Bonnie, Adelaide Airport’s Facility Dog Elmo, headspace Mount Barker Facility Dog Marley, and Iris, Apollo and Scout who support students in other South Australian schools.   

Guide Dogs SA/NT Chief Executive Officer Dan Cox said the organisation trained dogs which would go on to their working lives supporting people in the community, whether as a Guide Dog, Facility Dog or Assistance Dog.  

“Westy is a wonderful addition to the Torrens Valley Christian School’s Wellbeing team and will provide a calming and reassuring presence for students managing their studies,” Mr Cox said. 

“Facility Dogs like Westy are trained to the highest level to work safely and effectively in complex environments such as schools, courts, airports, hospitals and mental health services.   

"Having Westy working within the school can help students feel more settled and supported, creating an environment where they can focus on their learning and wellbeing.” 

Year 3 Student Jessie said: “Sometimes I find it hard to come into school but Westy comes and meets me in the carpark, and I get to walk to class with him. He makes me so happy.” 

Torrens Valley Christian School Principal, Anton Visser, said: “Westy has already been an incredible asset to our staff and students. The sense of ease and comfort he brings those students struggling with transitions and emotional regulation has been wonderful to watch, even helping children whose family is considering enrolling. We are very blessed to have him.”
