CH4 Global named as one of the world’s top Sustainable Development Goal leaders
CH4 Global has been named as one of the world’s top 50 United Nations Sustainable Development Goal leaders, in a series featuring on CNBC in the US.
The UN developed 17 SDGs in 2015 as part of its 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which marked an urgent call to end poverty by improving health, education, reduce inequality and spur economic growth, while tackling climate change.
Recognised by CNBC and Acumen – one of the world’s largest film producers – CH4 Global has been recognized as an SDG Leader, spotlighting the innovations behind the world’s first EcoPark seaweed cultivation system at Louth Bay, north of Port Lincoln, and the partnerships propelling the company forward—from UPL in India, Mitsubishi in Japan, Chipotle in the US and Lotte in South Korea.
At the Louth Bay EcoPark, CH4 Global is growing and processing Asparagopsis to formulate Methane Tamer, which when fed to cows reduces enteric methane emissions from cattle by up to 90 per cent. Earlier this year the company opened phase one of its EcoPark, where it has begun to grow and process Asparagopsis in 10 large-scale cultivation ponds with a combined capacity of 2 million litres - capable of producing 80 metric tonnes of the seaweed each year.
In phase two the facility will expand to 100 ponds capable of producing enough Asparagopsis to serve 45,000 cattle per day – a significant step toward meeting demand from CH4 Global's existing commercial partners in Australia and internationally. With further additional investment, the facility could eventually expand to 500 ponds capable of serving hundreds of thousands of cattle per day.
CH4 Global founder Dr Steve Meller said the recognition from CNBC and Acumen as one of the world’s leading companies working towards the UN’s SDGs underscored the need for urgent action to tackle livestock methane emissions, showing how effective Asparagopsis could be.
“Our seaweed-based cattle feed additive, Methane Tamer™, cuts enteric methane by up to 90 per cent, without subsidies, without tradeoffs, and with real economic benefits for farmers,” Dr Meller said.
“We are building momentum in Australia so that we can extend our reach to other countries where cattle is a significant source of methane emissions, as we work towards delivering gigatonne-scale climate impact within the next decade by making methane reduction practical, affordable and widely accessible.”
