Vision 20/20: National Pharmacies sees bright future, opening 20th optical store in luxe location

16 September 2025

National Pharmacies opened its 20th optical store in Australia today, its first new location in seven years, as demand for prescription lenses continues to grow amid increased screen time and an ageing population.

The milestone Optical by National Pharmacies store in North Adelaide is located in the health hub of a multi-million-dollar residential and commercial complex on an inner-city landmark site.

The 20th optical store is part of the new National Pharmacies pharmacy store, relocated to the iconic 88 O’Connell complex. The pharmacy has almost doubled its health and retail footprint, including an additional luxury beauty room to its service offering.

National Pharmacies CEO Mark Smith said the group’s 20th Optical by National Pharmacies store had been designed with the latest open-plan layout, with clearly zoned, but connected, areas for display, dispensing and consultation and light-filled shelving to showcase quality eyewear brands like, Prada, Gucci, Oroton, and Maui Jim, with lenses from Zeiss.

“Optical by National Pharmacies North Adelaide raises the bar of eye care by combining expert optometry with an expanded offering of premium eyewear and advancing lens technology, reflecting the evolving needs of our community,” Mr Smith said.

“We’re delivering not just better vision, but a better experience — one that puts eye health, comfort and style front and centre,” he said.

National Pharmacies Health Services Senior Manager David Tassotti said the group opened its first optical store in South Australia 35 years ago and had since expanded to 20 locations across the state.

“With factors like an ageing population, rising myopia rates, and a growing focus on preventative care, the prescription eyewear industry is set for continued expansion—and we’re proud to be part of that journey,” Mr Tassotti said.
