Centre artbeat program launched to showcase South Australian artists
The Adelaide Convention Centre has launched a new art exhibitions program to showcase the work of South Australian artists within the Centre’s public spaces.
Centre ArtBeat has been designed to provide space at the Centre for quarterly exhibitions by local painters, sculptors, and photographers.
The Centre will also provide the featured artists with technical support to help curate the exhibition, marketing support and run an event for each exhibition opening.
Featured artists, both established and emerging, will be selected by the Centre through applications received directly and partnerships with local arts organisations.
The first Centre ArtBeat exhibition showcases the work of Georgie Maddox who has unveiled a collection of new work entitled Ubuntu.
South Australian Georgie, who is based in the McLaren Vale, has just returned from living in Europe where she’s been combining her love of painting and travelling.
Ubuntu is a tribal African philosophy which roughly translates into “human kindness”. This exhibition draws on the powerful experiences of Georgie’s solo travel, nature, the self and their relationship to one another.
Adelaide Convention Centre Chief Executive Alec Gilbert said “we’re looking forward to exhibiting Georgie’s new work as the first featured Centre ArtBeat artist.
“The Centre ArtBeat exhibition program formalises the work we’ve been doing with local artists for a number of years,” said Mr Gilbert.
“In the past we’ve hosted occasional exhibitions from Emma Hack and the Jam Factory, but Centre ArtBeat will ensure a more regular program and provides an opportunity to a greater number of artists.
“The program forms part of a broader community engagement strategy by the Centre which encourages local people to visit us outside of hosted conferences and events.
“Our aim is to give more people a reason to visit us, whether to attend an art exhibition or one of the unique events created and run by the Centre such as the Cellar Door Wine Festival Adelaide or The Big Slapple – both held during the Adelaide Fringe or Regattas’ Live at Five on Fridays.
“The expansion of the Adelaide Convention Centre will allow us to do more community-based activities and attract a broader cross section of the community to the Centre.
“The expanded Centre will feature a ‘City Square’, a large space where community events can be staged, and a vibrant meeting place for locals and visitors alike.”
Georgie’s Solo Exhibition, Ubuntu, opened on October 10 and runs until mid- December and will be open to the public from 9am – 5pm daily. Entry is free.

About Georgie Maddox
Georgie Maddox was born in 1981 in Adelaide, South Australia. She began painting at a very early age and attended private art tuition from age 5 as visual arts were not offered to her as a subject at school until year 8, when she was 13. Georgie went to Scotch College in Adelaide and completed HSC in 1999, with an award for creative art, excellence in visual art practise, the first time this award was ever honoured or titled at the college. Whilst having been brought up in a very artistic family, notably her father Peter Maddox was a well know designer in the 1980’s, Georgie went on to study a Bachelor of Arts at Flinders University. After completing her BA, Georgie moved to London and travelled extensively throughout Europe and gained influence from the great impressionist and contemporary painters such as Picasso, Matisse and Modigliani. She studied for a brief time at the Institute of Picasso in Malaga, Spain to gain further inspiration into the Spanish culture and notably one her most favoured artists.
