ACC home to new Fringe hub: The Big Slapple
The Big Slapple, a new Fringe hub in the West End will be created next to the Riverbank at the Adelaide Convention Centre (from February 24 to March 18) as an alternative to the Garden of Unearthly Delights, meaning Fringe goers don’t need to battle the crowds in the East End.
The Big Slapple draws its inspiration from the mood of the New York club scene with a blend of funky indoor and outdoor venues including the Blue Note Club, Apollo Theatre, 48 Lounge and Create and Combine – an art exhibition featuring street, tattoo and abstract art.
The Adelaide Convention Centre Chief Executive Alec Gilbert said the Riverbank will come alive with cabaret, comedy, live music, art and wine.
“Regattas Bistro + Bar will be transformed into The Blue Note Club with free music and entertainment along with public art displays and one of Adelaide’s biggest outdoor screens.
Food and drink stalls selling New York style street food and a licensed bar will be set up on the lawns outside.
The Blue Note Club will be serving Slapple Cider, created by The Hills Cider Co from the Adelaide Hills, and its signature cocktail – The Slappletini.
Free entertainment at the Blue Note Club will include a range of bands, DJ’s, aerosol art “battles”, interactive art displays and a large video screen to give the venue a “Times Square” feel.
Among the local artists to be featured at the Big Slapple will be body artist Emma Hack who has been secured to showcase a retrospective of her work over the last 10 years.
Located on the first floor above Regattas will be “Create and Combine” – a free art exhibition open from March 1 - 4 with different genres featured each night in an interactive display of talent, including John Engelhardt, world renowned illustrator.
Official Fringe Shows will be hosted at the Apollo Theatre and 48 Lounge with tickets available through FringeTix.
Adelaide Fringe Festival Director and Chief Executive Greg Clarke said it’s fantastic to have a new Fringe venue pop up in the West End.
“I’m looking forward to experiencing some great shows at The Big Slapple and catching up with friends for a drink overlooking the river after the show,” said Mr Clarke.
During the Fringe, the Big Slapple will also play host to the Cellar Door Wine Festival, which brings together the cellar doors of more than 150 South Australian wineries under one roof.
