Waugh in the West to launch new St Clair Oval

8 February 2012

Australian cricketing legend Steve Waugh will join players from the Woodville District Cricket Club and reigning SANFL premiers Woodville West Torrens Football Club (Eagles) on February 15 in an All Star Twenty20 cricket match to officially launch the new St Clair Oval.

The match will be the first to be played on the new St Clair Oval before it becomes the permanent home of the Woodville District Cricket Club next season.

Steve Waugh, who will play for the Woodville West Torrens Football Club (Eagles), will be joined by past and present cricket and football players Bernie Vince and Jared Petrenko (Eagles/ Adelaide Crows), Tim Nielsen (former Australian coach and Redback) and other local sports stars.

The match’s emcee will be former Australian and South Australian cricketer Wayne Phillips, who will also act as the second umpire for the evening.

The Waugh in the West All Star Twenty20 cricket match is being run as a community event by the St Clair Joint Venture and the City of Charles Sturt and is expected to attract hundreds of spectators.

St Clair Project Director Brian Virgo said he’s delighted to bring Steve Waugh to the West and partner with the Council to stage this community event.

“The community facilities and open space at St Clair are shaping up well with the new Oval now complete, over 1 km of walking and cycling trails now open and work starting on the wetlands starting this year,” Mr Virgo said.

“On completion, St Clair will have twenty-two hectares or one third of the development dedicated to open space for the whole community to enjoy - a space equivalent to 11 times the size of AAMI Stadium.”

City of Charles Sturt council CEO Mark Withers says the event at St Clair is a great opportunity to launch the new oval and sporting facilities.

"Charles Sturt is excited to welcome a sporting hero into our City to celebrate the opening of the new oval and change rooms. We have many local residents and sporting clubs who will love the chance to meet Steve Waugh and join together to enjoy the new and improved facilities,” says Mr Withers.

"The new oval and change rooms will allow our community groups, sporting clubs and residents the opportunity to be active in a modern and safe environment. Easy access, quality facilities and open space are important to our City."

The Waugh in the West All Star Twenty20 cricket match is also being used to introduce young people to local sporting clubs in the area including the Vipers Soccer Club, Western Magic Basketball Club and Woodville South Junior Football Club. The clubs will run ‘come n try’ sessions during the event.

The Waugh in the West action starts at 4:30pm, ready for the coin toss at 5pm.
