Record production sparks strong interest in Coonalpyn Olive Grove
This year’s record olive production in Victoria has created strong interest in olive groves over the border with multiple expressions of interest for a 965 hectare South Australian property with over 119,000 irrigated trees.
Expressions of interest for the Coonalpyn property close on August 15 with selling agents Knight Frank are reporting renewed interest in olive groves following a few years of turmoil in the industry.
In 2007, production was five million litres of oil, and this year growers will harvest a record 15 million litres – about two and half times more than last year.
Ten years ago the figure was less than one million litres but during the last decade Australia's olive industry has grown into an agribusiness turning over more than $100 million annually.
Knight Frank Agent Garry Partington said investors are starting to look closely at the future potential of olive groves now the industry has weathered the storm over the last few years and readjusted to market conditions.
“According to recent reports in the Fairfax press the future looks promising with exports accounting for 40% of production, and local demand set to increase by 60% a year, said Mr Partington.
“The Coonalpyn property is ideally placed to take advantage of future industry growth and increased demand for high quality olives, with yields expected to increase over the next 4 years to reach maximum output in around 2018.
“The property comes with a 1,523 mega litre water licence, which provides for 5.3 mega litres per planted hectare, ensuring a sustainable future.”
Situated at Lots 51 and 52 Burns Road, Coonalpyn, the property is comprised of two Certificates of Title over 965 hectares of land and is made up of olives groves, native vegetation and land suitable for development.
The property shares access off Burns Road with a neighbouring olive grove.
Radio controlled irrigation system sits above an underground aquifier which provides a year round licensed water supply on demand that services the olive plantations.
The property is located in the upper eastern region of South Australia bordering the Mallee region, approximately 15km east of Coonalpyn off the Dukes Highway, the main highway between Adelaide and Melbourne.
