South Australian Freight Council welcomes South Road upgrade
The South Australian Freight Council welcomes today’s commitment by both the State and Federal governments to complete the Darlington and Torrens to Torrens elements of the critically important north-south corridor over the next four years.
SA Freight Council CEO, Neil Murphy said Adelaide’s north-south road corridor was extremely significant to the State's freight and logistics industry, as well as general commuters, and its continued improvement was vital to the State’s future transport needs.
“The South Australian Freight Council widely applauds both the Federal and State governments for their ongoing commitment to this important road route. We view this project as a positive investment in the future of South Australia,” Mr Murphy said.
“Growth in freight in Adelaide and South Australia is expected to more than double over next 20 years.
“The Transport & Logistics industry has a turnover in this State of $8.4 billion, and its direct and indirect employment effects exceed 80,000 people, so projects such as the South Road upgrade will have a significant flow-on effect to the industry and the overall economy.
“A free-flowing north-south corridor based around a comprehensive upgrade of South Road will be the backbone of Adelaide’s transport system and is a critical component of South Australia’s long-term economic prosperity.
“We also welcome the Federal Government’s commitment to completing the entire north-south corridor within the next 10 years.”
Mr Murphy said the SA Freight Council will also be looking for commitments in tonight’s Federal Budget for other key transport infrastructure projects, such as upgrading the Strzelecki Track to help kick start the unconventional gas industry, as well as other regional projects to assist the State’s mining industry.
