Adelaide's oldest cemetery launches first night tour series
South Australians can now tour Adelaide’s oldest cemetery after dark following the launch of West Terrace Cemetery’s first night tour series.
The new “West Terrace Cemetery By Night” tours highlight chilling stories of some of the state’s most colourful and mysterious characters via a theatrical sound and light experience, including period actors, providing an eerie yet exhilarating atmosphere for visitors.
The launch of the night tours offers a new way for people to learn about almost two centuries of SA’s rich but sometimes violent history dating back to 1836, including peculiar stories about eccentric entertainer Percy Grainger, and the mysterious “Somerton Man” who was found dead at Somerton Beach in 1948.
“The Adelaide Cemeteries Authority excited to launch these new night tours of Adelaide’s iconic West Terrace Cemetery, which provide visitors with an intriguing look at the lives and times of a host of mysterious South Australian figures,” said Adelaide Cemeteries Authority CEO Robert Pitt.
“Their baffling and bizarre stories will take visitors from Adelaide’s suburban beaches to the foothills, down dark dingy back alleys and into the city’s underbelly where murder, mystery and mayhem ensued.
“With new sound and light technology and accompanying theatrics, the unique evening tours are a first of their kind in South Australia and will certainly give visitors a memorable night out with plenty of shocks and surprises.”
Two timeslots are offered for the one-hour night tours which are limited to a maximum of 20 people per tour.
