Cold Temperatures Drive Demand at Hutt St Centre

The ongoing cost-of-living crisis is pushing more people into homelessness than ever, placing unprecedented strain on already-stretched frontline services as many struggle to afford basic necessities.
Hutt St Centre CEO Chris Burns said that with Centrelink payments no longer keeping pace with everyday expenses, people were struggling to find safety and shelter in Adelaide, where the housing market ranks among the least affordable in the world.
“Due to the housing crisis and rising rents, many are being priced out of the market with nowhere safe to go,” Mr Burns said.
“More than 7,400 people are experiencing homelessness across South Australia, and winter makes every day harder as temperatures drop.”
Temperature over the next two days is expected to peak at 16 degrees today and 15 degrees tomorrow, with more than a 90 per cent chance of rain. For those living on the streets, life becomes more difficult in these conditions.
Demand for Hutt St Centre’s services has surged 42 per cent over the past four years, with an average of 650 clients accessing services each month since January this year. As the cold reality of winter sets in, Hutt St Centre expects those numbers to rise further.
“When all else fails, people are left trying to survive in cars, tents or makeshift shelters,” Mr Burns said.
Tim* was one of many people experiencing the brutal effects of the housing crisis. Moving to Adelaide for urgent medical support, everyday living became impossible to manage, and as a result Tim spent four years living out of his van.
“In winter, if it’s freezing cold and you’ve only got one or two blankets—it’s still not enough,” Tim said.
Running out of food and battling the elements, Tim contacted Hutt St Centre, where he was provided with urgent support.
“Hutt St cares about your wellbeing. I never would’ve survived without ’em,” Tim said.
“My first shower felt great. The volunteers helped me with my laundry, and the staff had a real ability to find clothing that I really liked.”
How you can help
Hutt St Centre’s Winter Appeal 2026 is now live, as rising living costs drive more people to seek essential support.
Donations will be used to help Hutt St Centre provide practical support for people at risk of or experiencing homelessness, including meals, showers, laundry, medical care and assistance with housing.
“People arrive after nights in the cold—shivering, exhausted, and carrying very little with them,” Mr Burns said.
“Donations offer more than practical support—they bring warmth, dignity and relief to people during some of the hardest days of winter.”
Contributions to the Winter Appeal can be made on the Hutt St Centre website or by calling 08 8418 2500. Donations of $2 or more are tax deductible.
